The joy of serving and feeding my community unconditionally is what gave life to Khalipha’s Mobile Kitchen. I’m Khalipha Kane, a self-taught chef with over 23 years of experience bringing people together through food. What started as a way to provide for my family has grown into something much larger—a soul food truck that combines the rich, comforting flavors of Southern cuisine with the inclusivity of certified halal options.

My culinary journey is rooted in passion, resilience, and the experiences I’ve gained from traveling to over 11 countries. Each destination gifted me a deeper understanding of how food can transcend borders, bringing people together in powerful ways. Every recipe I create carries a piece of those experiences, and I’ve made it my mission to share that with my beloved Detroit community.

In the early days, I started “Khalipha’s Katering,” running it out of my own home. It was a side hustle at first, something I did while working other jobs. But cooking has always been my gift, and people took notice. Before I knew it, I was being asked to cater for weddings, corporate events, and family gatherings. But I wasn’t ready to make it my full-time career yet. That changed when COVID-19 hit. Like many, I lost my job and found myself at a crossroads. I turned to what I knew best—cooking. I started cooking more meals from home, and the response was overwhelming. That’s when I knew it was time to take the leap.

In 2020, I found an old journal entry from 10 years prior, where I had written a prayer for a food truck. I hadn’t believed it was possible at the time—food trucks seemed too expensive, too far out of reach. But that discovery shifted something in me. With renewed faith and determination, I started a crowdfunding campaign and raised $18,000 in less than a month. It was a sign that this dream was meant to be realized.

Khalipha’s Mobile Kitchen was born from that faith, hustle, and the unwavering support of my community. Today, my food truck is the heart of a growing movement to redefine soul food in Detroit. We serve the classic dishes you know and love—mac and cheese, collard greens, oxtails—but with a healthier, halal twist. No pork, less salt, but all the flavor. We offer lamb chops, beef ribs, and even lamb shanks, reimagining what soul food can be for those who can’t always find halal options in traditional Southern cuisine.​
